Chandreshwar Bhootnath Temple: Ever had a feeling that some place with deep historic value and connected by nature for using energy by spirits? You certainly will when you are there visiting Chandreshwar Bhootnath Temple at Paroda, South Goa. It is reportedly some 2,500 years old, they claim it, and dedicated to Lord Shiva, also more famous as “Lord of Ghosts.” So, well, it’s a site where one prays besides looking historically beautiful but aesthetically in a natural character as well.

A Glimpse of History of Chandreshwar Bhootnath Temple

It was located at Chandreshwar Hill. It is considered to be one of the oldest capitals of Goa; later it became known as Chandor approximately 10 km from this temple. In fact, earlier Bhoja kings were ruling here and considered Lord Chandreshwar as their family deity. Indeed, even the name Chandrapur comes from Lord Chandreshwar.

It has been renovated several times; yet, it still gives an old feel that has been attracting history lovers to visit the place.

Reaching the Temple of Chandreshwar Bhootnath Temple

The Chandreshwar Bhootnath Temple itself is a trip. Situated around 13 kms from Margao on the Kepem Road, a small stretch on the main road leads to an arch followed by a tarmacadam road leading up to the hill.

You can choose to drive up or climb over 400 steps to reach the temple. Either way, the journey is refreshing, with lush greenery and shaded forest paths offering cool, scenic views.

Explore the Temple Complex

Once you reach the temple complex, you will have quite a few interesting places to visit:

Shankh Bhairav Temple : This is a small shrine nearby, where Shankh Bhairav is worshipped as a Shivalinga. The doors open very rarely, only during the poojas in the morning and in the evening.

Kamandalu Thirtha: A holy water body near the temple where devotees pray.

Near the parking place, there are two tiny temples. There is Kaal Bhairav on one side, and the other is of Siddha Bhairav.

This also has rest places for the devotees and has recently constructed a wedding hall.

The Main Temple of Chandreshwar Bhootnath Temple

The major shrine is located about 60-70 steps from the parking area. This is a stone-built shrine, which seems to exude an aura of peaceful and ageless ecstasy. Here, in the sanctum, you will find a rock-cut Shivalinga as the centre of attraction.

There is another interesting feature in this temple. On a full moon night, the moonbeams actually fall on the Shivalinga straight. This would be a visual treat, indeed.

The temple also houses idols of other deities like Mahalakshmi, Navadurga, Vishnu, and Ganapati. A Palanquin procession of Lord Shiva takes place every Monday evening, which is a beautiful experience for devotees.

Festivals and Celebrations

On festivals, the temple bursts into fervent festivities. Major festivals include:

Mahashivratri: Great festival for Lord Shiva.

Other major festivals: Iinclude Hanuman Jayanti and Dussehra, which are highly observed.

Palanquin Procession on Every Monday: There is spiritual energy on every Monday by the Palanquin procession in the temple.

The road that takes you to Chandreshwar Bhootnath Temple is itself an experience one will remember. Lush greens surrounding the roads and the cooling breeze make the journey merry and fun; for the more adventurous, though, the return road with those steep slopes gives an thrilling ride.
